The Third Annual Rio Negro "photo
release" Peacock Bass Fly Fishing Tournament!
The Third Annual River Palm - Rio Negro "Photo Release" Peacock Bass Fly Fishing
Tournament will be held February 14 through 22 at the Rio Negro Lodge located on the Rio Negro River near Barcelos, Brazil. The hosts are Phil Marsteller of Amazon Tours and Rufus
Wakeman of River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp. Information on all-inclusive costs (which includes airfare, all ground transfers, all food and beverage including liquor and cigars, daily
laundry service, and entry fee to the tournament) is available from Captain Rufus Wakeman
This is a "team" tournament with two people on a team in the
photo release format. The honor system will apply, and there are no money prizes in this "gentlemen's" tournament. The winning team is determined by the total length of the four days biggest fish
catches in length. Contestants are supplied with a special board with a 36" ruler attached to the board. Fish are placed on the board right side down belly on bottom and a Polaroid photo taken
and the fish released. The individual angler who catches the largest amount of fish based on inches will be the individual winner. Other rules state that there will be a minimum length of 20 inches per fish
and that IGFA rules for flyfishing apply. Contestants are required to use a 12" shock tippet length and 15" tippet class length on 20-pound only. There are no size restrictions on the fly rods.
The 2003 Tournament was held February 1-9.. Check out the April issue of the PBA Newsletter for the final results. The Rolex/IGFA Inshore Qualifying Tournament sheds some light on a fish
that deserves more recognition from the fly community.
