Brazil Tourist Visa: Changes/Many/January 2008

Two week ago the US Embassy in Brazil, as mandated by Congress, upped the fee we the US charges Brazilians to obtain a US tourist Visa in order to cover the cost of processing. As of Monday of this week without notice, the Embassy of Brazil in Washington increased the fee the US citizens are charged from $100 to $130. Remember that if do not apply in person there is an additional $10 bringing the usual total to $140. Unfortunately there is more.

Also as of Monday and without any notice:

1. All consulates are required to collect not only the International portion of a computer print out of your international flight into Brazil but your US domestic portion as well. The “Letters of Itinerary” we used is issued are no longer of any value.

2. FedEx, UPS, DHL, Etc. are no longer allowed to deliver Visa applications to any of the Brazilian Consulates in the US. USPS is the only way they will accept it. No exceptions.

3. While you may already know you have to send your application to the Consulate that covers your state, the consulates now have their own individual forms and will not take another consulates form. (The exception to this is San Francisco and Miami.) The eight different forms needed for the eight different consulates can be found and down loaded by clicking the following:

4. In the past Yellow Fever Vaccination was up to you. Now it is required.

5. With the ridged enforcement of jurisdictions, a valid Drivers License is required and this is what determines the consulate to apply to.

There is no rhyme or reason to the Visas being issued. Houston is issuing 90 day visas, no exceptions. Chicago, varies from 90 days to one year. Miami and San Francisco are the overall exception from the norm. These two will issue you a 5 year visa and could care less about whose application you use. LA issued someone a 10 day visa last week. When they were asked why they did so they were informed, “Because we can!”

More up to date information can be found about the process of applying for a Brazilian Visa by going to:
