One of our clients recently suggested using our 9' rod socks to protect his
3-piece fly rods and 2 piece-spinning rods. He even goes one step further
and buys the split Styrofoam water pipe insulation (6'/$.99 @ Home Depot)

He cuts the insulation into appropriate lengths, inserts the rod sections, then slides the whole thing into the rod socks, doubling or tripling the
socks to accomodate different lengths.

Pretty innexpensive protection, not that rough handling ever happens at
our airports, eh ?

If you are flying TAM, you can carry your rods on in Miami for the trip down, but they make you check them in Manaus for the return trip home. I haven't figured that one out yet, but its happened on three straight trips.

As long as their packed in your carry bag, you can carry on the reels (with line) either way.....
