I just returned from a trip with a difference. My partner Bruce Manalio and I arrived in Luxor on the 21st May and then travelled to Aswan and Lake Nasser, in Egypt for a week of Nile Perch fishing. The first day out, Tuesday, drew a blank for both of us. On Wednesday our luck changed, the further away from the dam that we went, with 1 x 10#, 1 x 13#, 1 x 20#, 1 x 25#, 1 x 70# and a clunker 80# fish, mostly while trolling deep running Rapala X-Raps and Depth Raiders over sunken islands and pinnacles between 20 and 40 feet deep. On Thursday we had more with one small fish from the shore, 1 x 15#, 3 x 20#, 2 x 30# and 1 X 35#.
On Friday, we pulled in a 10#, 1 x 30#, 2 x 40# and a beautiful 50#.
Saturday and motoring back towards the dam, we caught only 1 x 15# and a 20# and on our final day within a couple of hours cruising from the dam, we blanked again. Proof that the extensive local netting is destroying the sport fishing in this huge expanse of water. The other team in the South of the lake caught plenty of fish too, but kicked our butts with 1 x 105# and a whopping 130# Perch!
This is a trip that I would recommend to people who would like to mix visiting all the historical sites and sounds of Cairo and Luxor and while there have a go at cqatching one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. The fishing is patchy but worth the wait, as most fish are big and bulky. The views are water, sand and rocks. Full stop!! No trees and poor in wildlife. You need to be a hardened and focused angler to handle 6 days of trolling in a row!
My next visit will involve plenty more fishing from the shore, with fly and smaller lures. I did enjoy the lighter gear more, with a 70# beauty on a heavy Peacock baitcasting outfit and 30# braid. It took me about 15 minutes to battle it to the boat.
There were four of us, with two people per boat. We slept and lived on the fishing boats in relative comfort, but ate and showered on the supply boat.
Anyone wishing to have more info on a trip there, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the only company that fishes there.
