You want to tie directly to the lure. If you use a split-ring, some component of your rod motion/force won't be translated as directly to the lure. I think the lure will run truer without the extra degrees of freedom a ring adds. Just my thoughts... I don't see how adding a split ring would be a benefit with these types of lures.
