Itapara Lodge Last Week

I'm back and I have to say the fishing was really tough. The water was just too high. I guess there was some significant rain after the report before we left that raised water levels a lot. I caught 34 fish total over the course of 6 days fishing which was the high number for our group of 7. 90% on jigs. Topwater action was non-existent. Our group is a mix of fly fishermen and bait casters. The fly wasn't anymore effective than jigs or rapala type subsurface lures. As high as the water was, it was amazingly clear. Tea stained, but not muddy at all.

The group caught two twenty pounders and a good number of 10 to 15 pounders and the rest were probably in the 3 lbs or less range. Strangely not many in the 5 to 10 lb range.

We spent 3 nights at the "rustic" camp down river and 4 at the main lodge. I found the rustic camp really very nice. I was a bit concerned when I heard we would be there, but could have easily spent the entire 7 nights there. The only thing it really doesn't have that the main lodge does is A/C, but the fans in the rooms were more than enough.

There were 12 Brazilians who alternated at the main lodge and the rustic camp with us. From what I heard, their fishing results weren't any better than ours.

Milton runs a 1st class operation and I'll go back. A few of the guides could use some experience (like the one who lost 2 Bogagrips and a pair of pliers), but others were fantastic including the one that swam 20 yards into the jungle to drag a 14 pounder out for me.

Next year we are looking at March for our trip.
