Interesting post. Nice to know some advancements are being made that could lead to this being less of a problem in many world areas. Fortunately in the black, acidic (tannin) waters of most giant peacock bass areas, mosquitoes and/or malaria is not a problem for most anglers on boats, yachts, barges and other "mothership" operations.

I haven't taken any anti malaria meds for over 10 years now or I would have to be permantely on it with all the traveling I do. All of the areas we fish are basically malaria-free, and as Larry says, most are black-water/acidic/tannin watersheds.
Most anglers who come fishing with me wear long pants and sleeves anyway and put on mosquito-repellent if at all worried. I am not saying don't use these prophylactics, just I have seen some serious reactions from Larium and Mefloquin and also personally with Malarone and I will not be using it again.

Have to post this one! From a dear friend of mine on the PBA:
We are safe. Mosquitos are after blood, not Rum.
Sorry folks!

Steve, you say you have had trouble with Malarone? I would be interested in finding out about this as I have taken this medication several times. I did notice a few things while on it. Could you share your thoughts about it? Thanks!

I worked for years in numerous African countries and I have taken all kinds of different malaria prophylaxis (preventive) medicine. Malarone has some weird side effects. It will cause hallucination type visions/dreams that range from super scary to incredibly sexy. I started seeing stuff as soon as I closed my eyes to go to sleep, therefore I could NOT sleep. Just for the record, I was stuck with the super scary visions! Shocked
