Water level reports from some sources in the Amazon Basin claim that levels are normal (and low) on the Madeira watershed south of Manaus and high (normal for this time of year) on the Rio Negro and most of its tributaries (to the northwest).

Take a look at the PBA weather reports page on the website for the river towns in the Amazon. A 10-day report for Santa Isabel and even Barcelos predict very low chances of rain for the river. In fact, Barcelos, which normally shows a 60% chance of rain almost daily even in the dry season, only shows 2 days in the next 10 at that high percentage. Could that be right? Let's hope.

Hi Larry:

Our group is headed to the Madeira region Sept 10th so let's hope the water levels remain normal to low.

Thanks for the update. It's hard to get water level information so early in the season.

I'll have a firsthand report in a few days about a Negro tributary headwaters. You can monitor river levels of the Madeira and Negro on this following Brazilian hydrologic website. So far, this season is starting out similar to the last.

Dan:

Let's hope it matches last year since we averaged 100 fish / boat / day last year in the third week of Sept. Not too shabby....

My 8/16 trip to Cuiuni postponed because of high water.

My Brazilian contact said fishing conditions off the Rio Negro are bad due to high water. The Araca and Cuini are NOT good now. The Madeira is probably a different situation.

Just in. Waters throughout the Rio Negro are high pretty much everywhere, but they are falling fairly fast in a few places. Fishing is slow in most places but a few anglers are catching some nice fish (teeners). A few trips scheduled to sail the past two weekends on the Negro have been cancelled but a couple did take place with mixed results.

Thanks Larry, we are rescheduled for the first week of Nov. I will buy you a drink at the Tropical. River has not been named as this is written.
