Phillip: I agree with you on the costs. I previously posted on the site under the travel planning forum under 2008 season soldout many of the prices and increases from other lodges throughout the world. They all seem to raise prices each and every year.

welcome to the forum phil,
i've been going to the amazon for 6 years now. in my second year i was cancelled 3 times due to high water with no additionl fees nor charges.... i think that the outfitters of the amazon are the only one's who consistently do that. the level of integrity and the class in doing that is something weare very fortunate to have. and i agree that that policy has value and can cut deeply into profits. like yourself, i couldn't figure out how they made money.
over the years there have been a few brazilian anglers on some of the trips. we learned that they pay far less for the trip than we did and that the pay for the guides and staff was about $10 per day. they're income is derived from our tips. that said, when the prices were in the $2800-$3500 range i felt the financial arrangement worked well for everyone.
however in the past couple of years prices have increased for non brazilians to a range of @ $4300-$5400, the excuse being that the dollar fell in value against the real and the dramatic rise in fuel costs-neither of which is now the case-but the prices have still gone up-for non brazilian.
i also fish in other parts of the world-both salt water and fresh. contrary to the amazon increases, prices virtually everywhere are going down, and dramatically.for example, our belize tarpon trip that was $3600 has been reduced to $2800, and if we get 4 people in our group it's an additional $300 reduction for each angler. i have been bombarded with reduced pricing deals in alaska, the bahamas, montana, canada, new zealand and venezuela (salt water) this year-all places where the cost of operating far exceeds those of brazil, and all nationalities pay the same price. |
